Human Resource Sergeants play an essential role in the profession of arms. The Human Resources Sergeants locate, deliver, and brief vital information to the leadership in the Army. Human Resources Sergeants report the profession’s strengths, casualties, readiness, Morale Welfare, and Recreation support, deployment and redeployment operations, and other valuable information to the leaders and commanders. Five key elements make up the profession; expertise, trust, development, values, and services. There are also five major components that make up the professional; skill, confidence, leadership, character, and duty. Every Human Resource Sergeant needs to exemplify these traits. Human Resources Sergeants support and maximize operational effectiveness for every unit in the Army. The goal is to support the United States Army adequately. Reliable, responsive, and timely Human Resources support in the functional area is critical. If one of these aren’t accomplished then everything wouldn’t function properly. Human Resource Sergeants must uphold these standards at all times.
Each year the Army’s culture changes. Several factors that cause it to change include technology or war. Because of this, it is critical that Human Resources Sergeants be adaptive leaders. The roles of a Human Resource Sergeant while deployed is different from the roles of one in the garrison environment. While deployed Human Resources Sergeants must ensure to pay extra attention in detail and ensure all work is done accurately.” “Applying these principles allows the professional to allocate risk among the competing goals of mission accomplishment, force protection, and avoiding harm to innocents. If Human Resource Sergeants aren’t on the same page as the unit, the Army does not have the sufficient capabilities to employ personnel in the places the Army needs them to be. This is called Man the Force. It is an HR core competency and is described as an action or function that impacts the strength or readiness of an organization. (Department of The Army, FM 1-0) The Human Resources Sergeant uses management tools such as the Unit Status Report (USR) to show gains and losses. It is the Human Resource Sergeants responsibility that these reports are briefed and accurate. The USR helps to keep the Army’s numbers balanced, and anticipate future movements. If the Human Resources Sergeant does not forecast these upcoming changes, units could fall under the authorized strength, ultimately causing them to fail their mission.
