The the war or to flee to Canada
The story of “On the Rainy River”, is an important part in the meta-fiction/memoir book, The Thing They Carried written by Tim O’Brien. This chapter is written in Tim’s point of view as a teenager who just received a draft letter from the U.S.
Military to go to the Vietnam War. Tim uses symbolism to tell us the borderline between the two worlds, Minnesota and Canada. It also tests the bravery of O’Brien to either go to the war or to flee to Canada and pursue what he planned on doing. He states that “the Rainy River … separated one life from another (;) … the cold (sprayed) against (his) face … (as) (they) … passed into Canadian waters, across that dotted line between two different worlds…”
