The method of initial rates was used in determining the rate order of acetone.

A mixture of consisting of sulphuric acid, acetone, iodine and water was used for the two experiments performed to determine the reaction order of acetone, where with the second experiment performed the volume of acetone was doubled. Both mixtures were then titrated with standardized sodium thiosulphate, where sodium acetate acted as a quenching mechanism for the mixture before titration. The concentration of iodine was calculated from the volumes obtained and plotted graphs of concentration of iodine vs time, which the rate order of acetone was calculated using the gradient of the graphs plotted. The rate order with respect to acetone was found to be first order (1) using the initial rates method.
