ABSTRACT
The Railway Amenities Mapping Project was handed over to us in order to facilitate the train passengers with basic railway amenities required by the passengers like ATM’s, Toilet, Water Booths, Waiting Rooms, Snacks, etc.

This will be helpful to the passengers to search, visualize on map and navigate to their desired locations on the railway station to their Point of Interest (POI) collected through field survey.

For this purpose, preparation of base map along with the POI’s required by the train passengers is done for their ease.

This Project will provide easy accessibility to required resources as well as planning of Passenger’s Amenities in future.

Thus, the basic purpose of this project is to provide access to the public with the information system of Railway Amenities useful to them at the railway station.

INTRODUCTION
The Indian Railways operates one of the largest railway systems in the world, carrying over 20 million passengers daily over a network of tracks. Indian Railways (IR) is India’s national railway system operated by the Ministry of Railways. It is the world’s largest railway network operated by Government. The Railway functions as a vertically integrated organization providing Passenger and Freight services. It manages the largest railway network in the world by size, with 121,407 kilometers of total track over a 67,368-kilometre route. Forty nine percent of the routes are electrified with AC electric traction while thirty three percent of them are double or multi-tracked.

IR runs more than 13,000 passenger trains daily, on both long-distance and suburban routes, from 7,349 stations across India. The trains have a five-digit numbering system. Mail or express trains, the most common types, run at an average speed of 50.6 kilometers per hour. In the freight segment, IR runs more than 9,200 trains daily.

Improvement to Passenger amenities on Indian Railways (IR) is a continuous process. Present day passengers expect visible and qualitative improvement in public utilities and amenities provided at the Stations. With a view to meeting the expectations of the passengers, Indian Railways is making all effort to provide improved facilities at the stations including those located in small cities/towns. Indian Railways has more than 8000 Stations. It has always been the effort of the Railways to provide adequate amenities to the passengers at the stations. Certain amenities are provided at the time of construction of new stations based on anticipated volume of traffic. Amenities are further augmented from time to time with growth in passenger traffic handled at stations, based on the felt need, expectations of the travelling public and availability of funds.

Hence, The Upgradation of amenities at railway stations is a continuous and on-going process to provide ease and comfort to all the passengers and, will provide easy accessibility to required resources as well as planning of Passenger’s Amenities in future. Presently, development of stations is undertaken from funds allocated for passenger amenities by the concerned zonal railways on a regular basis.

Thus, the basic purpose of this project is to provide access to the public with the information system of Railway Amenities useful to them at the railway station.

OBJECTIVE
To prepare the base map of the Sarai Rohilla Railway Station with the help of Open Street Map (OSM) layer and collect the Points of Interest (POI’s) through field survey and mark those POI’s on the base map, making the final railway amenities layer.

STUDY AREA
National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi is the capital territory of India. It is bordered by Haryana on three sides and by Uttar Pradesh to the east.

Sarai Rohilla Railway Station is one of the oldest and important railway stations in Delhi with coordinates 28°39?47?N and 77°11?11?E. The station is suitable for meter gauge trains and the station is served by the North Western Railways. Its station code is DEE.

The railway station is rather very small compared to the other stations in Delhi. One of the prominent examples of these huge stations in Delhi are the Hazrat Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar railway stations. The place used to be known as “sarai” which means a resting place especially for the travelers in the Mughal era.

The Delhi Sarai Rohilla Railway Station is located in the North Delhi District. The station is located at a distant of 5 kms west of New Delhi Railway Station.

The Tracing of the railway network was started by using Landsat imagery. Using this, large parts of railway network in the northwest and southern India were mapped almost completely. The featureless terrain helps in easy identification of the railroad lines even in low resolution imagery.

Sarai Rohilla railway station has been developed as a terminus. Many trains originating from Delhi city towards Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra start from Sarai Rohilla railway station and end there. It has a ticket reservation center, three washing lines for train rakes and five platforms. The Two platforms of adjacent Vivekanandpuri railway halt are connected to Sarai Rohilla railway station by a common foot over bridge.

Shastri Nagar and Pratap Nagar on the Red Line of Delhi Metro are the nearest Metro stations to Delhi Sarai Rohilla Railway Station. Karol Bagh on the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro is the nearest Metro station to Delhi Sarai Rohilla Railway Station.

Amenities available at Sarai Rohilla Railway Station include waiting room, computerized reservation office, tea stall, vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshment rooms, book stall, STD/ PCO booth and a GRP office. The station has three washing lines for train rakes and platforms.

However, there are plans to redevelop the station as part of the Smart Cities Mission, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between the Ministry of Urban Development and Indian Railways in October 2016. As per the MoU, areas around the station will also be redeveloped and the redevelopment aims to achieve better passenger amenities, easy access, integrated public transport hubs, optimal utilization of land, etc.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Railway station is the first point of contact between railway and their passengers. This is the gateway through which people find their way in to a town or city. World over Railway stations are undergoing a major shift. Hence, a special attention is required to passenger amenities at stations.

As the passenger traffic is increasing day by day, it is the duty of the administration to consider the growing demand of passengers and to facilitate the passengers with required amenities, while planning for provision of stations.

PASSENGER AMENITIES AT RAILWAY STATIONS
Passenger amenities provided at stations have been classified into the following three categories:
Minimum Essential Amenities- It is the prescribed minimum standards according to category of station provided at all stations. These include- Booking facilities, Platforms, Shelters/Shady trees, Drinking water arrangements, waiting hall/shed, seating arrangements and others.

Recommended Amenities- The Minimum Essential Amenities may not be in proportion with actual passenger traffic. Therefore, norms for increasing the amenities are provided as per the laid down scale. Based on category of the station and the number of passengers dealt with at any time during peak hours.

Desirable Amenities- Provided to improve customer satisfaction and the interface Desirable Amenities which includes catering ; vending stalls, adequate parking and circulating area, train indication board, public address system etc. Desirable amenities are provided based on the need and relative importance of the stations.

Amenities for Physically Handicapped Persons- Provision of ramps/escalator/lifts to existing FOBs/Subways may not be feasible as a general solution. This facility has to be mainly provided through pathways at the end of platforms for handicapped passengers, on wheelchairs (to be provided free of cost), duly escorted by coolies (on payment), as per present practice.
METHODOLOGY
Railway Stations are often complex and include both transport connections and varying amenities. A complex station can be mapped with varying degrees of detail.

The Methodology involved in railway amenities mapping are as follows:
Preparation of base map with the help of OSM Layer in QGIS.

The Prerequisite to compile amenities information onto a map is the selection or creation of a base map upon which we place this information. And, this is done with the help of Open Street Map (OSM) Layer through Landsat in which we can create free editable base map of Sarai Rohilla Railway Station as the featureless terrain permitted easy identification of the railroad lines even in low resolution imagery.

Verification of the base map is to be done through field survey by actually observing the study area ; collecting Points of Interests (POI’s) of the Sarai Rohilla Railway Station through field survey i.e. amenities available to the public.

Marking the POI’s on the top of the base map prepared through point shape file by marking them meticulously.

Making the final railway amenities layer using appropriate style and symbology and correct labelling and categorization of features in attribute table data according to their reliable fields.

Thus, with the help of following methodology we will get our railway amenities map ready for further analysis with the help of symbology table as shown in table 1 below.

RESULTS ; DISCUSSIONS
The Analysis will help us in understanding the attributes that contributes to the satisfaction of passengers at an Indian railway station. Evaluating service quality in public domain is a method of comparison between stations.

As the passenger traffic is increasing day by day, it is the duty of the administration to consider the growing demand of passengers and to provide the required passenger amenities, while planning for provision of stations.

The following considerations normally determine the scope and scale of the passenger amenities at the railway stations:

Availability of funds
The Amenities provided at the railway station include:
Entry ; Exit- The general sequence of the component space follows the customer’s path: entry, through the control area, to the platform, and onto the train. Station’s entrances and exit provide the link between the station and the surrounding streets, and their design reflect the distinct requirements of both. Entry and exit provide convenient access to all the passengers.

Platforms- The Platform length is of uniform width to accommodate the train being the minimum essential amenity.

Parking- Parking is the desirable amenity, located away from the station structure and separated by physical barriers. Vehicular access to station area is limited.

Escalator- It is provided to avoid a concentration of passengers at a particular area but the amenity provided isn’t enough for passengers.

Lift- Lift is provided to assist the mobility impaired, as well as customers with baggage, packages, or who may be otherwise burdened, and to provide an enhanced quality of general customer service, comfort and convenience. It is a good amenity service provided for handicapped.

ATM’s- The Presence of ATM’s has provided easy availability of cash in emergency to the public.

Foot Over Bridge- Foot over bridge is a convenient and techno-economically feasible. Inter connecting the high level or low level platforms for passengers ease.

Stairs- Public stairs are intended for normal passenger circulation and are joining the foot over bridges for easy platform access for the passengers.

Train Information Boards- The Train Information Board is the need and of relative importance for the public. Being a desirable amenity it is a mandatory amenity at the railway station.

Parcel- Dedicated parcel terminals are set up with superfast parcel services.

Toilets & Water Booth- Toilets & Water Booths are available to the passengers and general public as the minimum essential amenities and are present adequately all over the railway station.

Seating Areas- It is the minimum essential amenity at the railway station for public comfort and ease.

CONCLUSION
Railway Stations are the important component of transport system. The Railways are mandated to provide for basic facilities like safe drinking water, clean toilets, proper lighting, lifts, escalators, waiting rooms, etc. at the stations as well as in the trains, besides maintaining the acceptable level of cleanliness.

The Standing Committee on Railways on Passenger Amenities and Safety strongly advocate that the maintenance of amenities should be undertaken by the Railways on a uniform pattern and also that Railways re-visit their station-category based passenger amenities approach and implement a multi-pronged strategy by assisting technology, user awareness, provision of mechanized equipment as well as penalty provisions.
There are many such issues needed to be handled properly:
Issues affecting productivity like loss of efficiency, crowd management, etc.

Maximum use of space which is convenient for the user & economical use of space must be provided, as there are unmanaged spaces like stairs, walkways, platforms etc.

Parking Facilities should have special norms like multi-level parking, is the need of major railway stations.

Least possible inconvenience to passengers, road commuters and residents.

And, there are many such issues need to be handled with proper care and control while providing passengers with useful amenities for their comfort and ease at railway stations.

Hence, the primary goal is to provide a safe, reliable, cost-effective, with easy maintenance and passenger oriented public information system. The design of station amenities must therefore address the issues identified here in.

LEARNING OUTCOME
Since, this was my first summer training experience I learned a lot while undergoing this training. The Exposure of the official world helped me in understanding various facts and figures about the railways and the application of GIS in this field. The experience of the field survey was also one of them which helped me not only in my report preparation but also in self learning of how a project is managed and completed with all the efforts and hard work.
