Of mice and men takes place in 1930’s America. Steinbeck uses a cyclical structure to represent migrant workers living on a daily basis. There are two main characters in this novel. George Milton and Lennie Small. The title for this novel comes from a poem which was written in 1785 by a Scottish Poet named Robert Burns. In the 1930’s migrant workers tended to work alone because they knew they weren’t sticking there for long. Money was scarce in the 1930’s because of the wall street crash. George Milton was small but intelligent and Lennie was physically strong but not as clever as George was, migrant workers lived their life alone travelling from one place to another, however, George and Lennie were different because they had a familial relationship which made them become like brothers.
