Do you smile at strangers? Have you ever noticed that whenever you see someone smile at you, you tend to smile back even just a little? Do you know why this is happen? It’s because smiling is contagious. I’m here to explain to you why you react this way. Before that, what is smile? A smile is a facial expression formed primarily by flexing the muscle at the side of the mouth. Basically, smile is the symbol that was rated with the highest positive emotional content. From dictionary, the exact definition of smile is a pleased, kind, or amused facial expression, typically with the corners of the mouth turned up and the front teeth exposed. People of different ages are smiling for numerous reasons. Most of them are smiling to show their emotion of happiness. One day I really have a bad day and all I want is that day to be over. Somehow, I accidentally bumped to this stranger and she smile at me for no reason. Automatically, I smiled back at her even though I really have a bad day on that day. Although my day did not change because of the interaction but I felt my mood improve slightly in that moment. Sometimes people smile just to be friendly or polite and sometimes they may smile as a sign that they think they recognize you. Many of you do not realize how important smiling actually is. Here in my speech, I would like to share with all of you three benefit of smile that is your brain throws a little feel-good party, smiling help you live longer and happier and smiling can attract positive expression that will serve us well in life. Hopefully, by the end of this speech you’ll be smiling a whole lot more. We will start by looking what smiling can affect to our brain.
Smiling is the universal sign of happiness. Every time we smile our brain throws a little feel-good party. The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness. For starters, smiling activates the release of neuropeptides that work toward fighting off stress. Neuropeptides are tiny molecules that allow neurons to communicate. They facilitate messaging to the whole body when we are happy, sad, angry, depressed, and excited. The feel good neurotransmitters dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are all released when a smile come across your face as well. This not only relaxes your body, but it can lower your heart rate and blood pressure. The endorphins act as a natural pain reliever which makes us feels happy. They are also a stress reliever that 100% organically. The serotonin release brought on by your smile serves as an anti-depressant or mood lift. Many of today’s pharmaceutical anti-depressants influence the levels of serotonin in your brain, but with a smile, you again don’t have to worry about negative side effects and you don’t need a prescription from your doctor.

If you have ever visited a children’s hospital, I am sure you have witnessed first-hand how smiles and positive feelings can help our bodies heal. When you smile, your body increases its production of white blood cells which strengthens the immune system. One recent study found that sick children who laughed and smiled more had a higher white blood cell count. You have probably heard the expression, “Laughter is the best medicine”; well it should probably include smiles too. A good laugh and smile can be beneficial to the lungs, boost immunity, and could even burn off calories. Smiles have been proven to make you happier and less stressed just like laughter can. The intensity of a person’s smile can help predict their life’s satisfaction and lifespan. In one study, researchers analysed the smiles of 230 Major League Baseball players from the 1952 player register, they categorizing them as “no smile,” “partial smile” and a “Duchenne smile.” They found that people with more authentic smiles were more likely to live longer than those who were only partially smiling, or not grinning at all. Smiling helps on a day-to-day basis. Smile is so powerful that it can change millions of lives for better. Smiling absolutely changes the way we think and feel. I usually purposely spend around 2 minute every morning smiling to charge my mood. I make it as morning routine. You can try if something goes wrong with your day. Try to smile to shift your mood. It helps you to feel less stressed, transform your mood quickly and put things in a different perspective. Smile can give you a positive emotion that can affect your stress levels and productivity. It makes your body feels more relax and reflect your brain more productive. Smiling also can increase confidence. There is nothing worse than putting much of preparation into a speech only to step out on stage and have your confidence completely disappear. One of the best ways to gain your confidence back is to smile. Smiling will not only make you appear more confident, but it will actually make you feel it. Smiling will help you conquer anything with confidence. Warm, friendly smile shows you’re relaxed and comfortable, which means you’ll come across as confident and secure. A little smile can have a big impact in helping you to overcoming shyness. And the more positive experiences you have the faster doubt, fear, and insecurity will fade away. Keeping these points as benefit of smiling, let’s see how smiling can affect people around us.
For the last main point, smiling can attract positive expression that will serve us well in life. Have you ever fought with your friends for a long time that you are not even talk to each other anymore? Nothing is worse than losing your best friend. Try to lower down your ego. Approach them first. Whenever you see them try to smile at them. Smiling is contagious. Once you smile at a person, it results in the other person smiling back at you. Smile can reduce the level of hatred they have towards the other person. There are no moments of hatred, and momentarily, you don’t have negative feelings towards the other person. This is how the journey towards peace begins. The world would be a better and a happier place to be in. Is it true that love and compassion comes rushing to one person once they smiles? It comes from the heart and touches the heart of the recipient. After all, nothing you wear is more important than your smile. No matter how challenging that you faced, smile is the key!
Smiley, happy people are thought to have more friends and be more successful, by appearing more confident and approachable. Since facial expressions make up a large portion of our communication, smiles are very important in social dynamics and can help us to build relationships and bonds with others. Facial expressions are also among the most universal forms of body language. Smiling when you first meet someone will indicate to the other person that you are genuinely happy to see them and that you are a positive person. Strangers are more likely to feel more comfortable around someone who smiles because they give out a sense of reliability. I believe it is the ultimate connection between all humankind. I have that one friend who has a very positive mind. She smiles all the time! Whenever I look at her, automatically i will smile within myself. I asked her whether she did not have any problem. Well she answered me calmly, everyone do have a problem. But it depends on us how we deal with it and solved the things. It seems that the self-perceptions and the judgments of society based on appearance become a self-fulfilling prophecy. In fact, your smile is not only affecting the way you are feeling but also how other people are feeling as well. Well, if you’re struggling for something nice to do for people, why not smile at them? Seriously, it’s a good deed.
To sum up, as humans, we tend to have a lot of emotional matter inside of us whether it’s good or bad. However there is one specific action that is the highest positive content that we can produce. That is, smiling. So, is smiling contagious? Yes, it most certainly is. When you see something that makes you happy, a signal travels to your brain. In fact Mother Teresa said “We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.” Now you know that smiling is a powerful tool that can be used to make yourself or others happy. Smiling is contagious not just because of how a smile looks from the outside, but also because of the intention and the feeling that is put behind a smile.
