Unreasonably high taxation caused hardship for many
As a result of this, many people starved
Farmers were forced to sell land – became tenant farmers because of this
Taxes for the poor increased. This cause many uprisings.
The price of rice was extremely high so poor people had extremely little to eat as they could not really afford anything – many went extremely hungry
Samurai and daimyo classes also suffered because they fell into debt
Rather than help the terrible situation for all the poor people, the Bakufu, cancelled the debts owed by the samurai and daimyo, abolished lots merchants and craftspeople and forced the peasants in the cities to go back to the countryside to become farmers. Japan also attempted to isolate itself from the world.
